MAN as Allies
The Men’s Anti-violence Network
focuses on decreasing men’s violence against women. Men’s violence
against women is prevalent across college campuses and the community. We
advocate decreasing such violence by educating men to become allies with
women. An ally can be defined as a person that is a member of the
dominant group, who works to end oppression for the oppressed
population. MAN believes that any attempt to change the larger culture
of violence against women should also focus on men’s willingness to
become allies and intervene on a direct or indirect level in situations
that could lead to violence against women. There are different ways men
can become allies such as raising awareness of male privilege, raising
awareness of the adverse effects of masculinity on women’s safety, as
well as teaching practical interventions skills.
