I’m looking forward to seeing The Clothesline Project at the State Capitol Rotunda tomorrow (February 13). It will be on display from 12 noon to 4 pm.

The Clothesline Project gives a voice to victims of domestic and sexual violence and their family members and friends by displaying individually decorated shirts hung on clotheslines that reflect the individual’s feelings about their experience. More than 100 shirts created by Utahans will be on display this year. While many of the images and messages are disturbing, the display provides a unique opportunity for the public to gain insight into how domestic and sexual violence impacts our families, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

I saw the Clothesline Project a couple of years ago at UVU, and it was powerful. I encourage anyone wanting to make a difference in the effort to stop domestic violence to some see the Project.

In addition, MAN and its allies will hold a news conference tomorrow at 11:30 in the Rotunda to discuss violence in Utah and how to reduce it. I hope to see a lot of MAN supporters there!

I’m really looking forward to getting together with other MAN men (and maybe even some MAN women allies, too) on Saturday the 24th to make some needed improvements at the South Valley Sanctuary. We’ll be caulking, painting, tiling and doing some outside cleanup as well. The Sanctuary provides an important service for victims of domestic violence in Salt Lake County, and we’re really excited about the chance to help them out!

We can always use more guys for the job. Come join us and make a difference in the lives of these wonderful women and children.

We’ll get started at 9 am, and should be done by 11:30.

If you’re interested in helping, please contact Ned Searle, main MAN guy, at nsearle@utah.gov.

Are you looking for something fun to do this Saturday (August 6), while also supporting a great cause? Then consider attending the “In Memory of…Event” at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City. The event goes from 11 am to 9 pm and features a broad array of local musical talent including the Greg Simpson Band, Fuzion Band, The Next Phase, Sam Payne, Trinity Attitude, Avapava , City Church Band, Crawford Irish Dancers, Dionysios Greek Dancers, Tagaloa Polynesian Dancers, and Latin Dance Heritage.

The “In Memory of…Event” remembers victims of crime and trauma in Utah, and raises money for the Utah chapter of the International Police and Fire Chaplains Association (IPFCA), which provides first-responder grief counselors to those victims. The event was formed in honor of Tetyana Nikitina, a 34-year old pre-school teacher and Utah resident who was killed by her former mother-in-law in January 2010.

The event will also feature several memorial displays including “The Field of Honor” fallen soldiers from the war on terror, “Memories Live On” family memorial picture display, the “Served with Honor” display which honors those who have served their country in any branch of the armed forces, and the “Crime Victim Memorial” which recognizes those who have lost their lives as a result of homicide.

You can buy tickets online at www.inmemoryofevent.com for $10, or at the door for $15. Children 12 and under are free.

The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is located at 1355 W. 3100 S. in West Valley City.

MAN is a supporter of the event, along with the Utah Domestic Violence Council (UDVC). Several of us will be there Saturday, working hard to get more people to sign the MAN Pledge.

It should be a great time. We hope to see you there!

Ned Searle, Dave Duerden, Jerry Blackburn and I had a great time last Friday installing new lighting in several rooms at the South Valley Sanctuary. The South Valley Sanctuary helps adults and children throughout Salt Lake County who have been victims of domestic violence. More than 500 women and children receive temporary housing and other important services at the shelter every year. I visited there for the first time earlier this month and met with Karla Arroyo, the executive director. I was so impressed with everything Karla and her staff are doing to provide such critical services to these very important women and children.

The Sanctuary is a great facility, but like any other shelter goes through a lot of wear and tear. That’s why MAN has volunteered to get a team together to do some basic repairs and upgrades to the facility. In addition to the lighting, this includes caulking, sanding and painting inside the facility; laying new linoleum tile in bathrooms; and painting and landscaping outside.

We’ll return to the shelter on Saturday, September 24 to finish up the work. We’ll meet there around 9 and should be done by lunchtime. We’re hoping for at least 30 volunteers.

We’re looking for some good men and women who want to help! Do you know anyone who might be interested?

Please contact me at stevereiherPR@hotmail.com or Ned Searle at nsearle@utah.gov if you’d like to help us help the women and children at the South Valley Sanctuary. We’ll also continue to share information on the projects here and on our Facebook page.

MAN will participate in several other events and activities in the next few months. I look forward to telling you about them in future posts!

I was fishing around the internet and came across a promotional campaign for “Manventures”, a group venture between Kohl’s, Dockers, and Southwest airlines. I then starting looking around the internet to see what other kinds of things targeted men’s sense of emasculation to get them to by, read, or self hate. it was almrming. So here is my question of the week. WHat is a healthy amount of masculinity? can we, or should be promote this kind of old school manliness or should we reframe masculinity entirely?
WHat are your thoughts?

On Tuesday the attorneys’ for Bryan David Mitchell, a man convicted of the kidnapping and illegal sexual activity of a teenaged Elizabeth Smart stated they would be asking for a lighter sentence for Mr. Mitchell because Ms. Smart didn’t appear to “suffer extreme psychological harm”. This move is extreme upsetting and damaging, not only for Ms. Smart but also for all victims of sexual violence in Utah. Although Ms. Smart was courageous, poised, and in control on the witness stand and during a few public after nine years of love and support, she may still be experiencing trauma form her experience. However, we think that no matter how well a victim of violence is or appears) to be in no way excuses or lessens the violence in the first place. What do you all think about the defense attorney’s strategy?
