Q: Why was MAN created?
A: As our mission states, MAN was created to “end domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other forms of interpersonal violence in Utah by increasing public awareness of violence issues, actively engaging men in prevention efforts, advocating for more effective anti-violence policy, and ensuring that males of all ages understand appropriate male behaviors.”
Q: What does MAN do?
A: The Men’s Anti-violence Network of Utah (MAN) works to raise public awareness about interpersonal violence issues, and teaches men how to build healthy relationships and resolve conflicts peacefully. MAN also engages men in community efforts to help victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
Q: Who belongs to MAN?
A: Anyone can belong to MAN. They just need to sign the MAN pledge and commit themselves to preventing interpersonal violence. They are then usually approved for membership by the MAN founding committee.
Q: When was MAN started?
A: Some of MAN’s founders began discussing the concept of a ‘men’s anti-violence organization’ as early as 2008. The group continued to grow in 2009 and beyond.
Q: What is MAN’s relationship with the Utah Domestic Violence Council, the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault, or other anti-violence organizations?
A: MAN looks to partner with any organizations that are committed to preventing interpersonal violence. Members of other anti-violence organizations serve on MAN’s founding committee. However, MAN is not formally affiliated with any other organizations.
Q: How is MAN funded?
A: MAN is funded with a short-term start-up grant from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We are currently soliciting financial contributions from interested organizations and individuals.
Q: Is MAN part of a national organization?
A: No. MAN is not affiliated with any national or regional organization.
Q: How is MAN organized?
A: MAN is a volunteer organization of men and women that is led by a founding committee of 8 members.
Q: What is MAN’s political affiliation?
A: MAN has no political affiliation. It is non-partisan. MAN members come from many different political backgrounds.
Q: Does MAN only focus on preventing violence against females, or does it also work to end violence against males?
A: MAN opposes violence against all individuals, including those in the gay community, and actively works to prevent it.
Q: What does it cost to join MAN?
A: It costs nothing to join MAN.
Q: How can a business or nonprofit or civic organization get involved with MAN?
A: MAN is always looking for participants in its anti-violence events and activities. In addition, business and non-profit organizations are encouraged to educate their employees on anti-violence issues and to hold their own events. MAN will provide materials and support to any organization looking for assistance.
Q: If I donate to MAN, how is my contribution used?
A: Contributions to MAN are primarily used to create educational materials for our public awareness campaign. Please contact Steve Reiher, MAN program manager at sreiher@ucasa.org if you are interested in making a financial contribution to our efforts.
Q: How often does MAN meet?
A: MAN leaders meet frequently, and MAN sponsors events and activities on an ongoing basis. General membership meetings are held quarterly.
Q: Can women join MAN?
A: While the purpose of MAN is to engage men in the effort to prevent violence, women are also encouraged to join the organization. In fact, MAN currently has women members.
